Event Types

Event types help categorize and visually distinguish different kinds of events on your club calendar. Each type has its own color and default duration.

Accessing Event Types

Navigate to Admin > Settings > Event Types from the sidebar or settings page.

Default Event Types

When your club is set up, the following event types are created automatically:

| Type | Color | Duration | Description |

|------|-------|----------|-------------|

| Match | Red | 3 hours | League matches and fixtures (system type) |

| Club | Blue | 2 hours | Regular club sessions (system type) |

| Training | Green | 1.5 hours | Coaching and practice sessions |

| Social | Amber | 3 hours | Social events and gatherings |

| Meeting | Purple | 1 hour | Committee and club meetings |

System Event Types

Match and Club are special "system" event types:
  • They cannot be renamed or deleted
  • Their color and duration can still be customized

The Match type enables additional match-specific features when creating events:

  • Home team selection
  • Opposition name
  • Home/away toggle
  • Away venue address fields

Creating an Event Type

  1. Click Add Event Type
  2. Enter the details:
- Name (required) - e.g., "Tournament", "Junior Session"

- Color - Choose from presets or use custom color picker

- Default Duration - How long events of this type typically last

  1. Click Create

Choosing Colors

Colors help members quickly identify event types on the calendar.

Tips for choosing colors:
  • Use distinct colors that are easy to tell apart
  • Consider color blindness - vary brightness, not just hue
  • Match your club's branding where appropriate
  • Use red/orange for important events (matches, deadlines)
  • Use blue/green for regular activities
Preset colors: 12 carefully chosen colors are provided, but you can use any custom color via the color picker.

Default Duration

The default duration pre-fills when creating new events:

| Duration | Good for |

|----------|----------|

| 30 minutes | Quick meetings, briefings |

| 1 hour | Committee meetings, coaching sessions |

| 1.5 hours | Training sessions |

| 2 hours | Club nights, practice matches |

| 3 hours | Matches, tournaments |

| 4 hours | Full-day events, socials |

This is just a default - you can adjust the duration when creating individual events.

Editing Event Types

  1. Click the Edit (pencil) button next to the event type
  2. Update the details
  3. Click Update
Note: System event types (like Match) cannot be renamed, but you can still change their color and default duration.

Deleting Event Types

  1. Click the Delete (bin) button next to the event type
  2. Confirm the deletion
Restrictions:
  • System event types cannot be deleted
  • Event types in use by events cannot be deleted (update those events first)

Best Practices

  1. Keep types focused - Create types for distinct activities, not specific events
  2. Use consistent naming - "Training Session" vs "Training" - pick one
  3. Limit the number - Too many types make the calendar cluttered
  4. Review periodically - Archive types no longer used

How Event Types Work with Calendar

When viewing the calendar:

  • Events display with their type's color
  • Filter events by type to focus on specific activities
  • Legends show all active event types

When creating events:

  • Select the event type from a dropdown
  • Duration auto-fills based on type's default
  • Match events show additional fields

Troubleshooting

"Cannot delete: events using this type"

Update or delete events using this type before deleting it.

"Cannot rename system event types"

The Match and Club types are protected to ensure core functionality works correctly. You can still change their color and duration.

Colors look similar on calendar

Choose colors with different brightness levels, not just different hues. Light blue vs dark blue is easier to distinguish than blue vs cyan.
